Chapter Thirteen

“Ah, the detective. Mr.…” Nicola Patel looked John over thoughtfully.

He slid into the sterile little office he’d visited her in last time. “Tilney. John Tilney.”

She flipped her long braid over one shoulder and smiled, opening her mouth as if to say something. But when Lowell followed him through the door, she frowned slightly instead.

“This is Lowell Kanaan, my…ah…” John wasn’t sure exactly. Boss wasn’t right. Boyfriend wasn’t professional. Hmm.

“Partner,” Lowell supplied.

John beamed.

“Ah, yes, the man with his name on the card. Nicola Patel.” The customer-service smile from last time reappeared. Nicola eyed Lowell up and down before returning her attention to John. “I saw about Eddie on the news.”

“Tragic,” John said.

Nicola nodded. “I suppose I should’ve expected to hear from you again, but I’m afraid I don’t have anything new to tell you.”

“We’re looking into a lead, actually,” Lowell replied. Nicola looked surprised that he was the one answering. “We were told Mr. Quintus had a second client list. Do you know anything about that?”

“Why would there be a second client list?” She narrowed her eyes.

“You’d have a better idea of that than us,” John pointed out. The whole vibe was getting weird in here now.

“Apparently not,” she said drily. “Maybe if I knew who told you, that would help.”

Lowell said, “That’s confidential information, unfortunately. All I can say is, it’s someone who’d have reason to know.”

Her gaze went steely. “Well, that’s not much for me to go on, then, so I guess I can’t help you.”

John marked Lowell’s expression and saw that he wasn’t even close to giving up. So John said, “You could look, though. Just, maybe do a search on your network or something? The last list was a lot of help to us. And any information could bring us closer to the murderer.”

A muscle in her jaw twitched. “This shirt is better.”

John glanced down: polka dots today. “I still prefer the paisley.”

“There’s no help for you,” she said.

“I see what you did there.” John grinned and slipped into the seat across from her. “Come on, Ms. Patel, any little thing you can find…”

Lowell put his hand on the back of the chair, “Sorry to interrupt—Ms. Patel, could you direct me to the bathroom?”

“Through there and to the right.” She didn’t even look up at him.

John watched him go, vaguely confused since he was pretty sure Lowell had just hit the bathroom before they’d left the office, but hey. Maybe he’d had too much coffee today?

Nicola was going on. “Look, I’ll run a quick search. But I’m telling you, there’s no second list. Or if he had one, it was unofficial, and I wouldn’t know anything about it.”

“Yeah, I remember, you two weren’t close,” John said, refocusing.

“I could’ve lost my job for giving you what I already did,” she said.

“Why?” he asked.

“Because it’s privileged information,” she snapped.

He held up both hands in surrender. “Okay, okay, I get it. But this is murder we’re talking about here.”

“Well, you’re barking up the wrong tree. The cops still haven’t been in.
